  • Known as “The Pass in the Grass”, the 1987 showdown remains one of the classics in NASCAR history. Following the restart for the final 10-lap segment, Dale Earnhardt traded bumps with Bill Elliott and Geoffrey Bodine as he made his way to the front. Upset with Earnhardt’s aggressiveness, Elliott retaliated by knocking him down into the frontstretch grass. Earnhardt was able to maintain control and maneuver back onto the track – without losing the lead. He went on to win the race and the ire of Elliott.
